How to start a jewelry business: steps, costs and packaging

To start a jewelry business, choose whether you make or resell, build a small range you can repeat, work out your costs, register the business, and pick packaging that suits the price. Customers judge a ring or a necklace by the box it arrives in before they touch it.

Jewelry is small, so shipping looks easy. It isn't: small items get crushed, scratched and lost, and the box has to protect and impress at the same time.

The steps, in order

  • Choose your lane. Handmade, designed by you and made elsewhere, or resold. Each has a different cost and a different story.
  • Build a small range. Five to ten pieces you can make the same way each time beats fifty one-offs.
  • Test the market. The SBA says market research lets you reduce risk before you launch and shows what competitors already offer.
  • Work out costs. Materials, tools, packaging, fees and shipping.
  • Register the business. Name, structure and state filing.
  • Choose where to sell. A market stall, your own site or a marketplace. Start with one.
  • Package it properly. The box sets the price people expect.

Costs, registration and licenses

The SBA's guide to startup costs says to count at least one year of monthly expenses and to add about 10% for what you can't predict. Registration is its own step: see how to register your business, and check local licenses and zoning with your city or county.

How you describe your metal matters too. Words like gold, sterling or plated carry rules in the US, so check them with a lawyer or the FTC before you print them on a tag or a box.

Jewelry packaging: what to pick

Match the box to the price of the piece and to how it gets to the customer.

Print one logo, one finish. Foil on the lid is usually enough.

When not to order custom jewelry boxes

If a stock box already fits and you don't need it printed, buy stock. It's cheaper and faster. Custom boxes start at 50 units per design, so under that a stock box with a printed sticker will cost you less. For gift sets, see custom gift boxes. Selling candles as well? How to start a candle business covers that side.

  • You're still choosing pieces. Order boxes once the range is fixed.
  • You need them within days. Production takes 10–12 days from proof approval, and shipping is on top.
  • You're testing one product. Start with 50 units. That's enough to test a box with real customers before a bigger run.

Ready for 50 or more? Send the size of your biggest piece, or a photo of it on a ruler. We draw the box for free.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start a jewelry business with no money?

Begin with a small range you can make from materials you already have, sell at a market or online, and reinvest. The SBA advises counting at least a year of expenses so you know what you'll need.

Do I need a license to sell jewelry?

It depends on your state, county and city. The SBA notes that local governments set their own rules and that zoning can apply even to home-based businesses. Check your Secretary of State and local government.

What packaging do I need for a jewelry business?

A box sized to the piece with an insert that holds it still, plus a mailer for shipping. Rigid boxes suit higher-priced pieces and folding cartons suit lower-priced ones.

How many jewelry boxes can I order?

50 units per design. Under that, use stock boxes with a printed sticker.

Do I need custom boxes to start?

No. Use stock boxes first. Move to custom once the range is settled and you can commit to 50 units per design.
