Maryland packaging law
What Maryland's packaging law means for your boxes.
Maryland is one of seven states that have enacted packaging extended producer responsibility laws, along with Maine, Oregon, Colorado, California, Minnesota and Washington, according to Holland & Knight's state EPR update.
- The law follows where you sell, not where the boxes are made. A Maryland brand, or a brand selling into Maryland, may have obligations. Smaller producers can be exempt, so check the thresholds with the Maryland Department of the Environment.
- Paper boxes are the simplest starting point. Skip lamination and window film and a box stays easy to recycle.
- Keep your spec on file. Know the board, coatings and inks in every box, so a compliance review is a lookup, not a hunt.
Our take: soft-touch lamination undoes the point of a paper box. Our paper-first materials are 100% recyclable. Soft-touch and window film add a plastic layer the box didn't have. We make boxes, not legal calls, so check your obligations with whoever handles compliance.
