Overview
What is a donut box?
Glaze is the problem. It sticks to a lid, so most donut boxes leave a gap above the donuts or use a window. Tell us your tallest donut, glaze and toppings included.
A donut box is a shallow, wide box with a hinged lid, often with a die-cut window so customers see the donuts. Some include an insert that holds each donut apart; others are open trays.
When food touches the board, the board and inks have to suit it. In the US, paper that touches fatty food falls under rules such as 21 CFR 176.170. We specify food-contact board once we know what goes in.
- Base and lid. One piece that folds, or two pieces.
- Window. Die-cut, to show the donuts.
- Insert. Paperboard with cavities, or plain dividers.
- Handle or tuck. Optional, for carrying a dozen.
Specifications
Custom donut boxes: specifications

Board and build
Which donut box layout?
Pick by how many donuts and how you sell them.
| Layout | Holds | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single or two | One to two donuts | Counter sales |
| Half dozen | Six donuts | Gift and office orders |
| Dozen | Twelve donuts | Standard orders and events |
Layout changes the box size, so send your donut diameter and height.
Compare
Donut box or bakery box?
They overlap. Donut boxes are shallow and wide.
| Donut box | Bakery box | |
|---|---|---|
| Depth | Shallow | Deeper, for cakes |
| Window | Common | Optional |
| Insert | Cavities or dividers | Trays or cupcake cavities |
| Best for | Donuts and pastries | Cakes, cookies, bread |
For cakes and cookies, see custom bakery boxes.
Sizing
Sizing a donut box
Send the diameter and height of your biggest donut, topping included, and how many go in the box. We add clearance on the dieline.
A box deeper than it needs to be wastes board, and one too shallow smears the glaze. How to measure a box covers the numbers.

FAQ
Custom donut boxes: questions.
What is the minimum order for custom donut boxes?
50 units per design. That's enough to test a box with real customers before a bigger run.
Are your donut boxes food safe?
We specify food-contact board and inks when food touches the box. Tell us what goes in, and whether it's greasy, and we'll confirm.
Can donut boxes have a window?
Yes, a die-cut window. We recommend leaving it open rather than adding film, so the box stays plastic-free.
Can you make a box for a dozen donuts?
Yes. Send the donut size and count and we draw the box and insert.
Do donut boxes keep donuts from sliding?
An insert with cavities does. Send us your tallest donut so the box leaves room for glaze.
How long do custom donut boxes take?
10–12 days on most orders, counted from proof approval. Shipping time is on top.
Honest fit
When not to hire us.
You need boxes by the weekend
Production is 10–12 days plus shipping. Buy stock donut boxes now and switch to custom for the next order.
You need fewer than 50 boxes
Our minimum is 50 units. For 10 or 20, a stock box with a printed sticker will cost you less.
You need boxes next week
Production runs 10–12 days before shipping. If your launch is sooner, buy stock boxes now and switch to custom for the next run.
You want plain brown boxes
If nothing gets printed, a stock box supplier is cheaper and faster. We're worth it once the box carries your brand.
How many donuts per box?
Send your donut diameter and height, the count per box and how many boxes you need.
