Overview

What is a pizza box?

Grease is the test. Hot cheese and oil mark plain board, so we ask what you bake before the proof and specify food-contact board. If you need pizza boxes by Friday, buy stock now, because custom runs take longer than that.

A pizza box is a flat, square corrugated box with a hinged lid. It arrives flat, folds up in seconds and holds a hot pizza flat. The corrugated flute is what holds the heat and keeps the lid from sagging.

When food touches the board, the board has to suit it. In the US, paper that touches fatty food falls under rules such as 21 CFR 176.170. We specify food-contact board once we know what goes in.

  • Base and lid. One piece, scored to fold.
  • Corrugated flute. The wavy layer that insulates and stiffens.
  • Lock tabs. Keep the lid shut without tape.
  • Print. Usually one or two colors on the lid.

Board and build

Which board for a pizza box?

Most pizza boxes are E-flute. The liner color sets how the print looks.

Pizza box board options
BoardLooks likeBest for
White E-fluteBright, clean printFull-color logos, pale brand colors
Kraft E-fluteBrown and natural. Ink prints darkerOne or two strong ink colors
B-fluteThicker wallHeavier pies, stacked deliveries

Pale colors print duller on kraft. If your brand is light, use a white liner. Custom kraft boxes goes through which inks hold up on brown board.

Pizza box or bakery box?

Both are for hot or fresh food, but they do different jobs.

Sizing

Sizing a pizza box

Send the diameter of your pizza, plus the depth if you bake thick crust. We add clearance when we draw the dieline, so don't add it yourself.

Size matters for delivery as well as fit. A box too big for the pie slides around, and a bigger box costs more to ship in bulk. If you aren't sure how to measure, read how to measure a box.

Who uses custom pizza boxes

  • Pizzerias. One logo on the lid, so every delivery is an ad.
  • Food trucks and pop-ups. 50 units is enough to test a run.
  • Ghost kitchens. Printed boxes that stand apart from the platform's.
  • Home bakers selling pizza. Check your state's rules for selling food first.

Finishes

Keep it simple.

Aqueous coating goes on every box by default. Pizza boxes need print, not decoration.

Aqueous coating

Default on every box.

One-color print

Cheapest, and prints cleanly on kraft.

Debossing

Rarely needed. Skip it unless the box is a gift.

Send the product dimensions, how it ships and how many you need. A photo on a ruler is enough to start.

Your packaging specialist builds the dieline around your product. Structural design is free.

  3. Step 03

    You approve the proof

Drop your artwork onto the dieline. We check bleed, folds and barcodes, and send a digital proof.

  4. Step 04

    We make and ship

FAQ

Custom pizza boxes: questions.

What is the minimum order for custom pizza boxes?

50 units per design. That's enough to test a box with real customers before a bigger run.

Are your pizza boxes food safe?

We specify food-contact board when food touches the box. Tell us what goes in and whether it's greasy, and we'll confirm the board before the proof.

Can you print inside the pizza box?

Yes, on request. Most brands print the lid only.

Are custom pizza boxes recyclable?

Corrugated is paper, so the board recycles. Grease soaking through is a problem for recycling, which is why light print and a clean liner help.

What size pizza boxes do you make?

Whatever your pizza needs. Send the diameter, and we draw the box around it.

How long do custom pizza boxes take?

10–12 days on most orders, counted from proof approval. Shipping time is on top.

Honest fit

When not to hire us.

You need boxes by Friday

Production takes 10–12 days from proof approval, plus shipping. If you run out this week, buy stock pizza boxes now and switch to custom for the next order.

You need fewer than 50 boxes

Our minimum is 50 units. For 10 or 20, a stock box with a printed sticker will cost you less.

You need boxes next week

Production runs 10–12 days before shipping. If your launch is sooner, buy stock boxes now and switch to custom for the next run.

You want plain brown boxes

If nothing gets printed, a stock box supplier is cheaper and faster. We're worth it once the box carries your brand.

What size is your pizza?

Send the diameter, and how many boxes you need a month. We'll come back with a structure and a proof.
